San Francisco Muni Streetcar Engineering & Restoration
San Francisco, CA
San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's (Muni) iconic fleet of vintage cable cars and PCC streetcars are world renowned, having served the city of San Francisco, California since 1912. To extend the life of this unique fleet of vintage transit vehicles and in planning for current and future service, MUNI tasked JAI to assist with engineering and restoration of many of its historic streetcars as part of a larger rehabilitation effort.
Rehabilitation and overhaul activities include comprehensive vehicle disassembly, carbody repairs, lighting, auxiliary electrical rework, wiring replacement, propulsion system evaluation and overhaul, air supply and braking system rehabilitation, new system maintenance planning, and documentation.
Our initial efforts include the complete rehabilitation of Street Car No. 1 – Muni's first streetcar in operation. This initial vehicle will be completed and presented to Muni in an "as new" condition while retaining its historic character in time for its upcoming 100-Year Anniversary Ceremony, tentatively scheduled for 2012. By restoring these vehicles, JAI is assisting the City of San Francisco with extending the life of a key historic and cultural icon well into the next century.
